Introduction

 The College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) was established on February 1, 1998. The goal of our college is to foster high-tech professionals to be ready to meet the trend in national economic construction and industrial development. We not only expect the college to propel and promote the integration of teaching/research resources and the development of related fields, but also hope that, in a forward-looking, well planned way, it will evolve its own research focus and features to fulfill the needs of professionals in a future society.

Features

The Integration of Teaching Resources

 We integrate the resources of the Electrical Engineering (EE) department and the Computer Science (CS) department, such as courses, laboratories, research space, and human resources, and utilize them effectively. Among the integrated resources, a synergistic integration of courses can further provide several series of training programs where students can select compatible courses offered by several of the college’s departments and institutes, based on their career plans. These programs are especially good for the prospective student who is interested in interdisciplinary studies.

Collaboration with the Industry

 Taking geographical advantage of our adjacency to the Hsinchu Science Park, which is the primary high quality R&D base for the high-tech industry in Taiwan, we are cooperating closely with the industry to enhance our research abilities and leverage the technical level of the industry.

Faculty

  Currently, the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has 109 full-time faculty members. A distinguished set of educators who devote themselves to excellent teaching and research, these academic leaders conduct research at a world-class level across a full spectrum of IT disciplines. Our faculty includes one fellow of the Academia Sinica, twelve IEEE Fellows, two IEEE Technical Achievement Award winners, and numerous winners of Outstanding Research Awards issued by the National Science Council. Most faculty members have been recognized by the professional societies in their respective fields.

 The college of EECS now consists of two departments, four graduate institutes and an interdisciplinary program:

  Institute of Information Systems and Applications(offers Ph.D. and M.S. degrees)         

  Institute of Photonics Technologies(offers Ph.D. and M.S. degrees)         

 In order to strengthen the collaboration between academia and industry, EECS College's Industrial Affiliates Program(EECS-IAP)was founded in 2004. Several major companies participate in this program. Through mutual collaboration, the program not only promotes research development in the EECS College, but also enhances the technical level of R&D labs in the industry.

 The college of EECS also coordinates on various research projects with other related research centers at NTHU, such as the Computer and Communications Research Center (CCRC), the Multimedia Technology Research Center, the IC Design Technology Center (DTC), and the Center for Nanotechnology, Materials Science, and Microsystems (CNMM).

Undergraduate Non-Degree Programs

 We offer the following interdisciplinary programs. Participation in these programs is open to students from all majors. A certificate will be issued to those completing the program.

The Semiconductor Industry and Manufacturing Program (SIM)

 SIM offers an integrated, state-of-the-art education for those attracted to the semiconductor industry. SIM offers a core course, “Introduction of Semiconductor Industry and Fabrication,” to link the corresponding elective courses provided by the College of EECS, the College of Engineering, and the College of Nuclear Science.

The Program of Information and Communication Media (ICM)

 The objective of this program is to foster developers of ICM content. This program emphasizes multimedia authoring and Internet applications for broadcasting, news, recreation, education, and commerce. The program combines both theoretical concepts and practical skills. Students can gain experience through special topic areas and internships.

The Micro-System Technology Program (MST)

 The courses constituting this program can be categorized into core courses and electives. After completing the core curriculum, students can continue their studies with advanced courses. Currently, electronic products are becoming more and more precise, highly dense, high-speed, intelligent, and miniaturized. We believe micro-systems technology will be one of the most influential technical fields in the future.

IC Design Curriculum (ICDC)

 This curriculum is aimed to provide on-campus VLSI design training as the second major field for students at National Tsing-Hua University (NTHU) who are not enrolled in the College of Electric Engineering and Computer Science.

The Bioinformatics Program
 This program is organized by the college of EECS and Academia Sinica. Through our in-depth teaching experience in mathematics, biology, and computer science, we have created a superior teaching and interdisciplinary research environment. Students who complete the training program will have the ability to do advanced research or work in related industries.

Plan

To nurture high-tech professionals

 Recently, the significant growth of IT-related industries has led to a huge demand for IT professionals. It is the obligation of the college of EECS to shape students to become future professionals in order to fulfill the needs of the industry. Education at the College of EECS can prepare students for excellence in research, teaching, and professional practice.

To leverage the technical level of EE and IT industries in Taiwan

 With more than NT$200 (US$6.6) million in research funding annually, the College of EECS pioneers EE and IT-related research in Taiwan. The government and the College of EECS both strongly encourage technology transfer through our industrial partnerships, in order to enhance the competitive advantages of Taiwan-based industries. We have set up the “EECS Industrial Affiliates Program” to encourage close cooperation between academics and industry.
